In the United States, drowning is the seventh leading cause of unintentional injury deaths for all ages and the second leading cause of all injury deaths each year for those 1-14 years of age (far behind motor vehicle crashes). In 2000, more than 1400 US children under age 20 years drowned (Center of Diseases Control, 2004).

+ Lifeguard Training – Traditional Pool: includes CPR, AED, First Aid
Course Fee - $180.00 / per person - class size 20 to 40 people
Course designed to prepare lifeguard candidates to recognize emergencies, respond quickly and effectively to emergencies, and prevent drowning. Course includes First Aid and CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer.
Participants must be 15 years of age, able to demonstrate 300-yards continuous swim, using the front crawl and breaststroke, able to retrieve a 10-lb weight from 7 feet of water and swim 20-yards, with legs only.
Participants must participate / attend all class sessions, demonstrate proficient land and water skills, and pass a written exam with a score of at least 80 percent. Upon successful completion of the Lifeguard Training course, candidate will receive a Lifeguard Training and First Aid certification valid for 3 years and a CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer certification valid for 1 year.
+ Lifeguard Training – Shallow Water: includes CPR, AED, First Aid
Course Fee - $145.00 / per person - class size 20 to 40 people
Course designed to prepare lifeguard candidates, working in a facilities with pool depth of 4 feet or less than 4 feet, to recognize emergencies, respond quickly and effectively to emergencies, and prevent drowning . Course includes First Aid and CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer.
Participants must be 15 years of age, able to demonstrate 50-yards continuous swim, using the front crawl and breaststroke, able to retrieve a 10-lb weight from 7 feet of water and swim 20-yards, with legs only.
Participants must participate / attend all class sessions, demonstrate proficient land and water skills, and pass a written exam with a score of at least 80 percent. Upon successful completion of the Lifeguard Training course, candidate will receive a Shallow Lifeguard Training and First Aid certification valid for 3 years and a CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer certification valid for 1 year.
+ Waterfront Lifeguard: must posses Lifeguard Training certification
Course Fee - $95.00 / per person - class size 20 to 40 people
Participants must be 15 years of age, able to demonstrate 550-yards continuous swim, using the front crawl and breaststroke, able to retrieve a 10-lb weight from 7 feet of water and swim 20-yards, with legs only.
+ Waterpark Lifeguard: must posses Lifeguard Training certification
Course Fee - $95.00 / per person - class size 20 to 40 people
Participants must be 15 years of age, able to demonstrate 300-yards continuous swim, using the front crawl and breaststroke, able to retrieve a 10-lb weight from 7 feet of water and swim 20-yards, with legs only.

Course designed to refresh skills and re-certify lifeguards. Participants must posses current Lifeguard Training, First Aid and CPR/AED for Professional Rescuer certifications in order to enroll in the recertification lifeguard training course. Participants must be able to show proof of current certifications on the first day of class. Participant must demonstrate proficient land and water skills.
Participants must be 15 years of age, able to demonstrate 300-yards continuous swim, using the front crawl and breaststroke, and able to retrieve a 10-lb weight from 7 feet of water and swim 20-yards, with legs only.

+ Lifeguard Instructor: Traditional Pool
Course Fee - $180.00 / per person - class size 20 to 40 people
Certification includes basic and instructor level certifications in the following: Lifeguard Training, Lifeguard Management, Basic Water Rescue, Water Safety Today, CPR/AED, First Aid, Oxygen Administration, Preventative Disease Transmission.
Course designed to train instructor candidates to teach Lifeguard Training, Standard First Aid, Lay Person CPRAED, CPR/AED for Professional Rescuer, Lifeguard Instructor Aide, Basic Water Rescue and Community Water Safety outreach programs. Candidates will develop an understanding of course materials, methods, policy, procedures, how to conduct training sessions and evaluating participants' progress.
Participants must be 17 years of age, able to demonstrate 300-yards continuous swim, using the front crawl and breaststroke, and able to retrieve a 10-lb weight from 7 feet of water and swim 20-yards, with legs only. Participants must be able to demonstrate proficient Lifeguard Training, First Aid and CPR/AED for Professional land and water skills, contained in the American Red Cross Lifeguard Training Course and pass a pre-course written exam with a score of at least 80 percent. Participants must have current basic Lifeguard Training, First Aid and CPR/AED for Professional Rescuer certifications. Participants must be able to show proof of current certifications on the first day of class.
Participants must attend all scheduled class dates and times, demonstrate proficient land and water skills and pass a written exam with a score of at least 80 percent. Upon successful completion of the Lifeguard Instructor course, candidates will receive Basic and Instructor level certifications in the following: Lifeguard Training (valid 3 years), Lifeguard Instructor (valid 2 years), Lifeguard Management, Basic Water Rescue (valid 3 years), Water Safety Today (valid 2 years), CPR (valid 1 year), CPR Instructor (valid 2 years), AED (valid 1 year), AED Instructor (valid 2 years), First Aid (valid 3 years), First Aid Instructor (valid 2 years), Oxygen Administration (valid 1 year), Oxygen Administration Instructor(valid 2 year), Preventative Disease Transmission.

Jeff Ellis & Associates Course Descriptions
National Pool and Waterpark Lifeguard Training Program
Please call for pricing on Ellis & Associates Classes
Course designed by Jeff Ellis & Associates (E&A): an all-encompassed licensing program, which includes: Lifeguard Techniques, CPR for the Professional Rescuer, Supplemental Oxygen, and Automated External Defibrillation (AED). Ellis and Associates provides three types of licenses: Shallow Water Lifeguard, Pool Lifeguard, and Special Facilities Lifeguard. Licenses are valid for one year and only at Jeff Ellis & Associates Facilities. Prerequisites are as follows:
+ Shallow Water Lifeguard
Applicants must be 15 years of age (proof of age is required on the first day of class), 50 yard continuous swim and swim a distance of 10 feet under water. License is only valid at E&A client facilities and facility pool depth is 4 feet or less.
+ Pool Lifeguard
Applicants must be 15 years of age (proof of age is required on the first day of class), 100 yards of continuous swim, tread water without arms for 1 minute and retrieve a 10 pound brick. License only valid at E&A client facilities and only at facilities not classified as a “Special Facility” by Jeff Ellis & Associates.
+ Special Facilities Lifeguard
Applicants must be 16 years of age (proof of age is required on the first day of class), 200 yard continuous swim, tread water without arms for 2 minutes and retrieve a 10 pound brick. License only valid at E&A client facilities classified as a "Special Facility" by Jeff Ellis and Associates.
+ Recertification Course
Course designed to refresh skills and re-license lifeguards in any of the above Ellis and Associates courses. Participant must posses a current Lifeguard Training license in order to enroll in a recertification course. Participants must demonstrate proficient land and water skills, as the course allows little time for practice. Proof of current license must be available on the first day of class.
